Discovering the Hudson by Ward Morehouse III
The Hudson Theatre, which opened in 1903, is much more than a beautiful facade, much more than a landmark Broadway playhouse with Tiffany glass mosaics and Roman friezes -- complete with verde-antique in Greco-Roman marble -- all of which recently and painstakingly restored by Millennium Hotels. With as much drama going on off-stage as beneath its historic proscenium arch, The Hudson has been the theater home for such titanic 20th century actors as George M. Cohan, Ethyl Barrymore, Laurence Olivier, Alfred Lunt, and Jason Robards Jr. As if that weren't enough of a resume, the storied Broadway palace has also played the big time as the studio where Jack Paar and Steve Allen did their nationally broadcasted TV shows. Elvis, Bob Hope, Sammy Davis Jr. and many others not instantly associated with Broadway have been celebrated Hudson guests too. Ward Morehouse III, whose family has been identified with theater for generations, uses the Hudson as a launching pad to write about the golden age of Broadway, live TV and beyond into the new, international age of corporate-theatre synergy.

Broadway After Dark by Ward Morehouse III, Ward Morehouse
"Broadway After Dark is a compilation of columns, stories and never-before-published profiles by my father, Ward Morehouse, and myself. The profiles were originally intended for a book called Stars I Have Known. The columns of his are representative of those he did for the New York Sun from 1926-1950 and after for other newspapers. I started writing sporadically about show business for The Christian Science Monitor in the 1970's and continued as a reporter and theater columnist for the New York Post, Reuters, New York Sun, amNew York, and the Epoch Times. It's my hope that these columns and stories, taken together, will be a portrait, however sketchy, of some of theater for the last and current century through some of their biggest stars, including Katharine Hepburn."

Life at the Top: Inside New York's Grand Hotels by Ward Morehouse III
Veteran Broadway columnist WARD MOREHOUSE III (formerly with the New York Post and New York Sun, whose "Broadway After Dark" appears in AM New York) has written a fascinating and entertaining new book "Life At The Top: Inside New York's Grand Hotels" (Bear Manor Media), a book that has no heroes, great history or noble purpose. It's simply a masterpiece of storytelling.

MOREHOUSE chronicles the of some of the 20th Century's literary and artistic giants, many of whom made their permanent domicile at some of New York's grandest hotel, including The Waldorf-Astoria, Chelsea, St. Regis, Algonquin, Pierre, Astor and Carlyle. He paints a unique portrait of their colorful, romantic, and sometimes tragic lives during the golden era of New York hotels and theatre, bringing the two worlds together in a work that reads like great fiction. The fast-paced volume reconfirms MOREHOUSE's status as a superb chronicler of celebrity high life during the last century as well as one of our most engaging storytellers.

Inside The Plaza: An Intimate Portrait of the Ultimate Hotel by Ward Morehouse III
From Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald cavorting in the Pulitzer Fountain to Ivana Trump patrolling the halls to inspect the rooms, this is the Plaza Hotel as no one has ever seen it, or been permitted to see it. The Plaza is the place where the Beatles headquartered when they invaded America. It's where George M. Cohan held court during the golden era of Broadway. It's where Marilyn busted a strap on cue, where Cary Grant started out from when he traveled North By Northwest, and where Macauley Culkin stayed after staying Home Alone. From the railroad tracks in the basement to the vast luxury suites overlooking Central Park, this is the full story behind the gilded doors, the inside scoop direct from the people who have cavorted there and worked there.

“Sex in the City” writers team-up for the weekly downtown theatrical soap

CEDAR CITY FALLS – A MID-WEST CONFLICT

Written by Liz Tuccillo, Cindy Chupack, Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky

Directed by John Ruocco

At The Cell Theatre (October 6-27)

Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn (November 4 – 24)

New York: Former “Sex and the City” writers are teaming up to write a weekly downtown theatrical soap titled Cedar City Falls – a Mid-West Conflict with Labyrinth Theater Company members.   Performances will be every Tuesday night at 7:00 and 9:30 at the Cell Theater (338 West 23rd Street) beginning October 6 for four weeks (through October 27) and will continue its final four weeks at  Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn ( November 4 – 24).

Cedar City Falls tells the story of a small peaceful town filled with hard-working, God-fearing folk who, due to a series of unfortunate incidents and petty squabbles, gets plunged into full-scale civil war.  It’s a parable (and parody) of conflict escalation, war, activism, peace and redemption.

With traditional “Soap Operas” being canceled or on the chopping block, the innovative former writers from “Sex in the City” look to take the genre to a whole new –old-school level– live and in front of a theatre audience. Cedar City Falls reunites the foursome back in the city, led by  Liz Tuccillo (“Sex and the City,” He’s Just Not That Into You), writers, Elisa Zuritsky, Julie Rottenberg (Emmy-nominated) and Cindy Chupack (Emmy-winner) agreed to team up to try their hand at live theater, joining the “Sex in the City” ladies are writers Craig Carlisle and Jacquelyn Reingold .

Each week offers the opportunity to get up-close and personal with the ever changing residents of Cedar City Falls as weekly guest stars including the first week’s narrator JESSE L. MARTIN (Rent, “Law & Order”) other guest starts include:  TALIA BALSAM (“Mad Men”), NADIA DAJANI (“Delocated”), KATE JENNINGS GRANT (Guys & Dolls), DAPHNE RUBIN VEGA (Rent, Film:Wild Things, Flawless), GRANT SHAUD (“Murphy Brown”), JOHN SLATTERY (“Mad Men”), and JOYCE VAN PATTEN (Marley & Me, “Desperate Housewives”).  Musical direction by Allison Leyton Brown.

All box office proceeds go to a different human rights charity every week, such as Amnesty International, Doctors without Borders, and Center for Constitutional Rights.

Extinction!  In the year 2005, the Oxford Hair Foundation predicted that

due to globalization & population intermixing, by the year 2100, the

recessive gene which causes red hair would be... EXTINCT!

In the year 2009, we redheads have taken matters into our own hands.

A world without redheads is no kind of world we are going to let happen.

If heads have to roll, well, they sure as hell won't be red...heads.

Will Swenson has appeared on Broadway in Lestat, 110 in the Shade & Brooklyn. He created the role of Stacee Jaxx in the musical Rock of Ages but did not perform the role on Broadway because he was offered the starring role of Berger in the Broadway revival of Hair, for which he was Tony nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical. Swenson played the role in the Off-Broadway 40th Anniversary concert version opposite Karen Olivo & was again cast as Berger in The Public Theatre's revival of the show in Central Park. In a prolific career spanning six decades, Charles Addams created several thousand cartoons, sketches and drawings, many of which were published in The New Yorker. But it was his creation of characters that came to be known as The Addams Family that brought Addams his greatest acclaim. Production 'up for bids' on Ebay auction!!
Patrons invited to bid for a special, private performance of the new musical
DAYS AND NIGHTS
this fall at La Mama ETC

In a rare, if not unprecedented move, theatergoers can bid for their own, private performance of a new musical, DAYS AND NIGHTS: TWO CHEKHOVIAN INTERLUDES being presented this fall at La Mama ETC (74A E. 4 St.) in New York City from September 17 to October 4.

The theatrical auction is being conducted on Ebay for the performance of DAYS AND NIGHTS on October 2, 2009. The performance can accommodate up to 150 friends and family of the highest bidder. The DAYS AND NIGHTS auction is presently underway, and will conclude on September 17, 2009. In addition to the private performance, the highest bidder and guests will participate in a champagne reception with the cast and creators of DAYS AND NIGHTS following the performance. A link to the Ebay auction is available at www.medicixxi.com.

The Ebay auction was the inspiration of DAYS AND NIGHTS creator and director Brian Ahn, who states that the bidding allows patrons to become "Medicis of the 21st century" and is an homage to that age of elegance and refinement in the 16th and 17th centuries in Italy when the Medici family in Florence commissioned musical performances and opera to be performed in an intimate setting.

DAYS AND NIGHTS: TWO CHEKHOVIAN INTERLUDES is a NY premiere production comprised of two new musical adaptations of short stories by Anton Chekhov: "The Doctor" and "The Joke."

More details about the upcoming production of DAYS AND NIGHTS follow:

Press contact: Sam Rudy Media Relations 212 221 8466

DAYS AND NIGHTS: TWO CHEKHOVIAN INTERLUDES
debuts Off-Broadway September 17 to October 4, 2009
New adaptations of two Chekhov short stories get NY premiere
At La Mama ETC

New adaptations of two short stories by Anton Chekhov -- created and performed by an international company of Korean, Taiwanese and American theatre artists -- will receive their New York premieres this fall when DAYS AND NIGHTS: TWO CHEKHOVIAN INTERLUDES debuts at La Mama ETC (74A East 4 St.) in Manhattan, with preview performances beginning September 17 prior to an official press opening September 20, 2009.

Comprised of the one-acts, "The Doctor, A Chamber Opera," and "A Joke, A Musical," DAYS AND NIGHTS is adapted and directed by Byungkoo Ahn, a third generation member of Korea's most prominent theatre directing family. Composed by Martin Herman with a libretto by T. F. Curley, "The Doctor, A Chamber Opera" is based on the 1887 Chekov story and visits the mindscape of a physician overcome with grief and uncertainty as he visits a dying young boy he has reason to believe is his illegitimate son. "The Doctor, A Chamber Opera" had its world-premiere in 2002 in Prague and Bruno in the Czech Republic with the help of The Trust for Mutual Understanding, an American foundation for cultural and environmental exchange between nations.

Based on Chekhov's 1886 tale, "A Joke, A Musical" features music by the composer regarded as the father of the popular Korean love song, the late Young Hoon Lee. The musical was created by Byungkoo Ahn, who blended Chekhov's tale of unspoken love with the celebrated, heartbreaking love songs of Mr. Lee, the most prominent composer of popular ballads in Korea. Lee's music was especially popular with young people in the 80's and 90's during that period of great political and social change in Korea. Today's generation remains familiar with Young Hoon Lee's music through popular remakes recorded by a new generation of Korean singers. According to Mr. Ahn, Chekhov was the favorite author of Young Hoon Lee, who died in 2008.

Chekhov's "A Joke" is the story of a man who lives with the memories of his first love: too shy as a boy to confess his love to the girl he adores, he recalls whispering in her ear words of love she never hears over her own screams as their sled flies down a silvery, snowy hill.

Musical arrangements and musical direction for "The Joke" by Heesun Hailey Chang is music director.

The cast of DAYS AND NIGHTS features Young Joon Chai, In Suk Kim, Sook In Em, Steven Sun and Choi Misun.

The production has costume design by Leon Wiebers, set design by Jose Ho and sound design by Curtis Curtis.

From September 17 to October 4, DAYS AND NIGHTS will perform Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be reserved by calling the La Mama box office at 212 475 7710 or by going online at www.lamama.org

Born in Seoul, Byungkoo Ahn is a director, playwright, designer and singer. At the age of 20, Mr. Ahn's production of 'Cavalleria Rusticana' was invited by 'Young Theatre Festival' at the National Theatre of Korea. Two years later, his production, 'Play' by S. Beckett was performed again at the National Theatre. In 1996 he was awarded the Mampist Grant, which is given to young exceptional artists for their further study by Samsung Foundation of Culture. Mr. Ahn received his MFA in theater directing from UCLA in 2000, and he served as a stage director of opera workshop programs at California State University, Long Beach and Chongshin University. His directing credit includes 'Amahl and the Night Visitors' with Opera California, 'La Calisto,' 'Dido and Aeneas' and 'Impresario' with CSULB Opera, and 'Orlando' and 'Consumer's Paradise' with Downtown Opera. As a singer/actor he also has appeared in several productions in Italy since 1995 as a member of La MaMa Umbria International. Most recently he sang the role of 'Milo' in the world premier, Il Corvo, directed by Ellen Stewart at the Venice Biennale Festival, Italy in the summer of 2006.

Under the guidance of the legendary Ellen Stewart, La MaMa E.T.C. enjoys international recognition as the home for theatrical experimentation. La MaMa was the first Off-Off Broadway theatres to support full-time resident companies, and was the first Off-Off companies to tour Europe. La MaMa has been honored with numerous OBIE Awards, dozens of Drama Desk Awards, Bessie Awards and Villager Awards. In January 1993, Ellen Stewart was inducted into the "Broadway Theatre Hall of Fame" becoming the first Off-Off-Broadway producer to ever receive this honor. In 2006, Ellen Stewart received a special Tony Award for supporting theatre artists of all nations and cultures in the development, production and presentation of new work. In 2007, she won the Prestigious Praemium Imperiale Arts Award, which is the Noble Prize for the Arts, named by Japan Art Association.

Well-known names of the theatre for whom La MaMa was their first artistic home in the United States include Andrei Serban and Elizabeth Swados (FRAGMENTS OF A GREEK TRILOGY); Jerzy Grotowski; Tadeusz Kantor (Cricot Theatre of Poland); Tom O'Horgan (HAIR); Lee Breuer (Mabou Mines); Elizabeth Swados (RUNAWAYS); Tom Eyen (DREAMGIRLS); Mike Figgis ("Leaving Las Vegas"); Joel Zwick ("My Big; Fat Greek Wedding"); Harold Pinter (THE ROOM -- La MaMa was the first presenter of Mr. Pinter's work in the United States); Kazuo Ohno (The Father of Butoh), Tan Dun ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"), Julia Stiles ("O"), and Diane Lane ("Unfaithful"), as well as artists from Japan, Nigeria, Korea, Zaire, Ivory Coast, and countless other countries.

Over the last five years, over 80,000 wine coolers were served, over 160,000 packs of pop rocks were consumed and over 330,000 attempts at "The Worm" were tried by folks attending The Awesome 80s Prom.

The Awesome 80s Prom is the acclaimed interactive experience in the style of Tony n' Tina's Wedding and The Donkey Show set at the Wanaget High's Senior Prom...in 1989! All your favorite characters from your favorite '80s movies are at The Prom, from the Captain of the Football Team to the Asian Exchange Student, from the Geek to the hottie Head Cheerleader, and they're all competing for Prom King and Queen.  And just like on "American Idol," the audience decides who wins, all while moonwalkin' to great retro hits like "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go!"  Come "Back in Time," to quote a Huey Lewis tune, and join the break-dance circle or just sit back and watch the '80s drama unfold. If you’re lucky, you’ll even get to dance with The Captain of the Football Team.  And this time, you don’t have a curfew!

The Awesome 80s Prom continues to be performed every Saturday evening at Webster Hall (125 East 11th Street).  Prom doors open at 8 PM; although there's dancing and Duran Duran from 7:30 PM.  Tickets from $49.99.   After The Prom, party all night at Webster Hall for free with each paid admission.  For tickets call toll free at 1-877-RAD-PROM (723-7766) or visit www.awesome80sprom.com.

Barnum of Off-Broadway” by The New York Times for his unique 21st century marketing strategies, Ken Davenport is becoming widely recognized as one of the most innovative theatre producers today. Ken’s visionary tech-savvy was also recently featured on a national commercial for Apple’s iPhone and he was named one of Crain's “Forty Under 40” in 2008 as a result of his fresh ideas and unprecedented success. Ken’s impressive Broadway and Off-Broadway production slate includes Oleanna, Speed the Plow, You’re Welcome America, Blithe Spirit, Altar Boyz, The Awesome 80s Prom and My First Time.  Ken’s current projects include adapting the novel and film Somewhere in Time into a Broadway musical and a documentary film about Red Wanting Blue—one of the top unsigned rock bands in the country.  He is the founder of www.BroadwaySpace.com, Broadway’s #1 social networking website, and he writes the popular blog, The Producer’s Perspective (www.TheProducersPerspective.com) which has been featured in New York Magazine, Vanity Fair, Gawker, The Gothamist, and more.

Career Transition For Dancers’ 24th Anniversary Jubilee

Monday, November 2, 2009 at 7:00pm    New York CITY CENTER

“Yesterday we lost a great dancer / actor who has graced us with memorable performances on stage, screen and television.  Patrick Swayze (1952 – 2009) will be honored posthumously with the 2009 Rolex Dance Award on Monday, November 2, at Career Transition For Dancers 24th Anniversary Jubilee Gala at New York’s City Center.  Our board of directors and the more than 4,100 dancer-clients nationwide send our deepest condolences to his loving wife Lisa Niemi Swayze and to his family,” stated Executive Director Alexander J. Dubé.

This past May when the Award was announced; Allen Brill, President and CEO of Rolex Watch USA stated “It is an honor to present the Rolex Dance Award to Patrick Swayze, one of the most recognizable American actors, dancers, and singer-songwriters of our time. We are pleased to celebrate not only his legendary career and many contributions to the world of dance, but also his continued support of the mission of Career Transition For Dancers.” At that time Patrick Swayze stated "I started as a dancer and in my heart I'll always be one. And as a dancer having made a transition to another discipline myself, I am honored to be a part of CTFD and very touched to receive this award."

Patrick Swayze  (August 18, 1952 – September 14, 2009), a three-time Golden Globe nominated actor, dancer, and singer-songwriter was best-known as the romantic lead in “Dirty Dancing and “Ghost”, and for the “North and South” TV-series.  His first professional job was as a dancer for Disney on Parade.  In the 70’s, the Texas native moved to New York to further his formal dance training.  He studied with the Harkness Ballet Company, and then the Joffrey, before joining the Eliot Feld Ballet as a principal dancer.  He later starred as Danny Zuko in the long-running Broadway production of Grease before his debut in films.  Numerous film roles followed, then international stardom arrived with his performance as the dance instructor Johnny Castle in “Dirty Dancing.”  It became a surprise hit and achieved massive international success, as well as garnering him the status of a pop culture icon.  Patrick also sang one of the songs on the film’s soundtrack, "She's Like the Wind," which he had co-written.  The song became a top ten hit and has been covered by other artists.  Some of his other film hits include “The Outsiders,” “Red Dawn,” “Road House,” “Donnie Darko,” "Too Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar" (Golden Globe nomination), and “Point Break” to only name a few.  He was also chosen by People magazine as a "Sexiest Man Alive." In 2005, Patrick was seen starring with his wife, Lisa Niemi, in the feature film, "One Last Dance." The film, in which Lisa made her directorial debut, was based on the award-winning play “Without a Word,” which Lisa wrote and they both starred in.  The following year, Patrick made his London stage debut in Guys and Dolls as Nathan Detroit. His previous appearances on the Broadway stage also include the musicals Goodtime Charley and Chicago.  This past season he starred in the A&E television FBI drama “The Beast.”

Rolex presents AMERICA DANCES! Celebrating Our Sparkling Heritage – Broadway, TV & Film which celebrates a variety of entertainment that defines our American culture—Past, Present and Future. This eclectic evening is an assimilation and fusion of styles that move from theater to concert dance, to television and film, in a vibrant homage to an array of dance genres. A film montage will pay tribute to the crazes and evolution of American dance.  America — a mover and a shaker of all times.  The Gala is always one of the entertainment-dance event of the new season.  The spectacular evening will include appearances by dance companies, musicians, dancers from major TV shows, and numerous stars.  It is produced & directed by Ann Marie DeAngelo.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

TO BECOME THE FIRST SHOW
IN BROADWAY HISTORY TO REACH
9,000
PERFORMANCES

Unprecedented Milestone to be marked

with special on stage presentation

following the matinee on Wednesday, September 16

The longest-running show in Broadway history, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, is set to reach another unprecedented milestone.  With its 8PM evening performance on Thursday, September 17, 2009, the musical will become the first Broadway show ever to reach9,000 performances.  The occasion will be marked the previous afternoon, Wednesday, September 16, with a special presentation during the 2PM matinee’s curtain call.  The post-show presentation promises a few on stage surprises for that day’s audience.  Now in its phenomenal 22nd Year, the Cameron Mackintosh/Really Useful Group, Inc. production, directed by Harold Prince, continues to play at The Majestic Theatre (247 West 44th Street), with no end in sight.

On Broadway, since its debut on January 26, 1988, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has grossed $740 million, making it the highest-grossing show in Broadway history.  Total attendance is over 13 million. Its international success – equally staggering – is represented by total worldwide grosses estimated at over $5 billion.  This colossal figure makes PHANTOM the most successful entertainment venture of all time, surpassing not only any other stage production, but also far surpassing the world’s highest-grossing film Titanic (at $1.2 billion) and such other blockbusters as The Lord of the Rings, Jurassic Park and Star WarsWorldwide, over 65,000 performances have been seen by 100 million people in 27 countries and 144 cities.

Since becoming the longest-running show in Broadway history in 2006 (when it surpassed the then-record run of Cats), every performance has set a new longevity record.  The show has always been a record-breaker, TPOfooterwith the New York production setting benchmarks that have dominated the industry: for capitalization (a then-spectacular  $8 million),  total advance  (a then-colossal  $18 million), total gross and attendance (now a whopping $740 million and 13 million, and counting) and even the number of years before a single ticket was ever sold at the TKTS ticket booth in Times Square (over 14 years, which is still the record, by a long shot).  It was also the first and remains the only Broadway show to reach 18, 19, 20 and 21 Years, as well as 8,000 performances – and now continues its long tradition of shattering records by becoming the first show ever to play 9,000 performances.

In addition to PHANTOM’s amazing longevity and continued box office success, the Broadway production continues to consistently earn rave reviews from returning critics.  This month, veteran critic John Simon of Bloomberg News gave it “Do Not Miss” status by giving it FOUR STARS, raving “PHANTOM is still the king of romance and chills!  Looming like Everest, it is deservedly Broadway’s longest-running musical.  With cunning direction, lavish sets and costumes and dramatic lighting, the visual opulence immediately grips you and sustains its hold.  Even after more than two decades, PHANTOM shows no evidence of wear, thanks to successively fine casting.”

The Broadway production is the winner of 7 Tony Awards including Best Musical.

There are currently ten productions around the world: London, New York, Budapest (Hungary), Nagoya (Japan), Warsaw (Poland), Copenhagen (Denmark), Seoul (Korea), Buenos Aires (Argentina), the U.S. National Tour and a revised production in Las Vegas at The Venetian.

Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber earlier this year confirmed that he has greenlit pre-production on a sequel to the show, Phantom: Love Never Dies.

Based on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it.  He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA stars John Cudia in the title role with Jennifer Hope Wills as Christine and Ryan Silverman as Raoul.  The musical also co-stars George Lee Andrews (Monsieur Andre), David Cryer (Monsieur Firmin), Patricia Phillips (Carlotta), Cristin J. Hubbard (Madame Giry), Evan Harrington (Piangi) and Heather McFadden (Meg Giry).  At certain performances, Marni Raab plays Christine.  Mr. Andrews has been with the production for its entire run and in 2006 was recognized by Guinness World Records as the inaugural record-holder for the performer with the longest time in the same Broadway show – a record he still holds and continues to add to with each performance.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and is directed by Harold Prince.  Lyrics are by Charles Hart (with additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe) and the book is by Richard Stilgoe and Andrew Lloyd Webber.  THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has production design by the late Maria Bjornson, lighting by Andrew Bridge and sound design by Mick Potter with original sound by Martin Levan.  Musical staging and choreography is by Gillian Lynne.  Orchestrations are by David Cullen and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The performance schedule for THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is Monday evenings at 8 PM, Tuesday evenings at 7PM, Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 8 PM, with matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2 PM.  Ticket prices range from $26.50 - $121.50 with Premium Tickets also available.  To order tickets visit telecharge.com or call (212) 239-6200.

Blind Lemon Blues Entered in Congressional Record

The York Theatre Company Honored by Rep. Charles Rangel in Congressional Record for

Blind Lemon Blues,

As It Begins Performances Today

The YORK THEATRE COMPANY (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director) proudly acknowledges the Hon. Charles B. Rangel for including their new show Blind Lemon Blues in the Congressional Record today. (Here is the complete text of Rep. Rangel’s speech).

Honorable Charles B. Rangel of New York
In The House of Representatives
September 8, 2009
Special Tribute to Blind Lemon Jefferson and Blind Lemon Blues
Madame Speaker, as the famed York Theatre Company of New York celebrates its 40th anniversary, today I rise to recognize their newest musical genius, Blind Lemon Blues and to pay tribute to the Legendary Father of the Texas Blues, "Blind" Lemon Jefferson.
Blind Lemon Blues celebrates the legacy of Blind Lemon Jefferson and his profound influence upon the development of American popular music.  Blind Lemon Blues is set in New York City in 1948 at the last recording session of the legendary Huddie Ledbetter, better known as Lead Belly, and combines elements of traditional blues, gospel, rhythm and blues, soul, doo-wop, and rap to evoke the enduring legacy of Blind Lemon and his contemporaries, Blind Willie Johnson, Lillian Glinn, Hattie Hudson, Bobbie Cadillac, Lillian Miller and Lead Belly himself.
“Blind” Lemon Jefferson was one of the most popular blues singers of the 1920s, and has been titled "Father of the Texas Blues".  Jefferson's singing and self-accompaniment were distinctive as a result of his high-pitched voice and originality on the guitar.  He used Dallas as a base to launch an extraordinary blues career, during which he made over 80 recordings of his intricate melodic rhythms and influenced countless artists, including B.B. King.  Other later blues and rock and roll musicians attempted to imitate both his songs and his musical style.
Often heralded as one of the most influential bluesmen of all time, “Blind” Lemon Jefferson was born blind near Coutchman, Texas in Freestone County, near present-day Wortham, Texas in September 1893.  Jefferson was one of eight children born to sharecroppers Alex and Clarissa Jefferson.  Jefferson began playing the guitar in his early teens, and soon after he began performing at picnics and parties. He also became a street musician, playing in East Texas towns in front of barbershops and on corners.
In the early 1920s, Jefferson traveled to Dallas, where he met Huddie “Leadbelly” Leadbetter and established the blues scene in Dallas’ Deep Ellum district.  Five years later, he was on the road of instant success.  Between the years of 1925 and 1929, Jefferson made over 80 recordings for Paramount Records and became the first commercially successful male black artist. Some of his most notable recordings are “Black Snake Moan,” “Boll Weevil Blues,” “Matchbox Blues,” and the song that would become his trademark, “See That My Grave is Kept Clean.”
Jefferson died from mysterious circumstances on the streets of Chicago on December 22, 1929, and was buried in the old Wortham Negro Cemetery. His grave was unmarked until 1967, when a Texas state historical marker was dedicated to him. He was inducted in the Blues Foundation's Hall of Fame in 1980. In 1997 the town of Wortham began a blues festival named for the singer, and a new granite headstone was placed at his gravesite -- a fitting tribute to the man who sang “...Lord, there’s just one favor I ask of you, see that my grave is kept clean.” In 2007 the name of the cemetery was changed to Blind Lemon Memorial Cemetery.

So Madam Speaker, I ask that you and my distinguished colleagues join me in recognizing the good work of Director and Choreographer Akin Babatunde and Alan Govenar for such a magnificent rendition of the life of Blind Lemon Jefferson and those Blind Lemon Blues.

Performances for Blind Lemon Blues, featuring more than 60 Blind Lemon Jefferson songs, begins today September 8th, with Opening Night set for Tuesday, September 15th. All performances will be at the company’s home at The Theatre at Saint Peter's (54th Street just east of Lexington Avenue). To purchase tickets, visit www.yorktheatre.org or call 212/935-5820.

Featured as Blind Lemon Jefferson is co-writer Akin Babatunde.  His other credits include his one-man show written with his brother, celebrated actor Obba Babatunde, entitled Before the Second Set - a Visit with Satchmo, which has received critical acclaim at theaters across the country. Also featured in the cast are Cavin Yarbrough and Alisa Peoples Yarbrough (of Yarbrough & Peoples, who received a Grammy nomination for the hit single “Don’t Stop the Music”), Inga Ballard, Carmen Ruby Floyd, Timothy Parham, with Skip Krevens on guitar.

Blind Lemon Blues was created by Alan Govenar and Akin Babatunde, has musical arrangements by Akin Babatunde, Cavin Yarbrough and Alisa Peoples Yarbrough, and is directed and choreographed by Mr. Babatunde.  Scenic design is by Russel Parkman, lighting design by Steve Woods and costume design by Tommy Bourgeois.  It will be presented by The York Theatre Company and Documentary Arts, in association with Central Track Productions.

Blind Lemon Blues pays homage to Blind Lemon Jefferson, America’s best-selling country blues singer of the 1920s. The New York Times called this new musical a lively and intelligent new musical. . .  an inspiration.” Seen briefly at the York in 2007, Blind Lemon Blues combines blues, gospel, R&B, soul, doo-wop and rap to evoke the enduring legacy of Blind Lemon and his contemporaries. Prepare to “go weak at the knees” as “Blind Lemon Jefferson’s voice emerges with full force” (Variety).

Jefferson was a blind street musician who played his guitar with a tin cup tied to it until a Paramount Records scout discovered him.  Between 1926 and 1929, Jefferson made more than 80 records and became the biggest selling down-home blues singer in America.  Blind Lemon Blues is set in New York City in 1948 at the last recording session of the legendary Huddie Ledbetter, better known as Leadbelly, and combines elements of traditional blues, gospel, rhythm and blues, soul, doo-wop, and rap to evoke the enduring legacy of Blind Lemon and his contemporaries Blind Willie Johnson, Lillian Glinn, Hattie Hudson, Bobbie Cadillac, Lillian Miller and Leadbelly himself.

Now in its 40th year, The York Theatre Company was nominated for five 2009 Drama Desk Awards, four 2009 Lucille Lortel Awards, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, and two Drama League Awards for its productions of Enter Laughing, The Musical and My Vaudeville Man! last season.  The York is the only theater in New York City — and one of very few in the world — dedicated to developing and fully producing new musicals, as well as preserving gems from the past. Winner of a special Drama Desk Award for developing and producing new musical theatre, York’s intimate, imaginative style of producing both original and classic musicals has resulted in critical acclaim and recognition from artists and audiences alike.  Under the guidance of Artistic Director James Morgan since 1997, the York has focused on new musicals in its Mainstage Series—most of them world, American, or New York premieres—by some of the field’s most esteemed creators, and has also helped launch the careers of many talented new writers. A number of York’s Mainstage productions, including The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), Souvenir, Jolson & Company, Pacific Overtures and Sweeney Todd, have moved to commercial productions on Broadway and Off-.  Musicals in Mufti series presents notable musicals from the past in simply-staged concert format.  The York’s Developmental Reading Series, which presents nearly 40 free readings of new musicals every year, was the incubator for the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit Avenue Q, among many other significant shows.

TO LOVE AND TO CHERISH At Theater For The New City Beginning September 3

When Does Marriage Become A Lie & When Do Lies Define Marriage?

Gene Ruffini Examines These Issues in his World Premiere Drama

TO LOVE AND TO CHERISH

At Theater For The New City Beginning September 3

Marriage, thy name is compromise. But when a family’s core values are hypocrisy, lies, denial and enabling, it’s a fair bet that relationships will be strained to the breaking point, as aptly demonstrated in the world premiere of Gene Ruffini’s bittersweet drama TO LOVE AND TO CHERISH. Directed by Jessica Zweiman and produced by Theater for the New City, the play will begin performances at the company’s Cino Theater at the TNC complex, located at 155 First Avenue, beginning on September 3rd.

Paul, a successful author and screenwriter, and his wife Joan, an actress, are summering at their upstate home in Duchess County. Joan leans on Paul (and the bottle) because of a mystery ailment that has left her virtually bedridden; Paul cooks, cleans and keeps Joan happy. Their grown children gather for a weekend at the summer house to celebrate Joan’s birthday: stockbroker son Don and daughter-in-law Elysse; favored son Michael and his wife, Susan; and Paul and Joan’s midlife surprise daughter Carla, who’s bringing home her business partner (and new fiancée) Mavis.

Sick of hypocrisy and denial, Don perversely delights in trading backhanded barbs and biting remarks with his soon-to-be-ex-wife and anyone else caught in the shotgun spray of his bitterness and self-loathing. Casualties caught in the crossfire of shouted truths, whispered lies, and desperate denials include the loss of innocence and the shattering of the status quo. In the end, can those left standing escape the tentacles of the family, and more importantly, will they even try to?

The cast of TO LOVE AND TO CHERISH features Bruce Colbert, Thesa Loving, Andrew Langton, Jessica Pohly, Jake Green, Kelly Campbell, Bethany Braun and Kimberlee Walker.

Gene Ruffini’s plays have been produced in New York City and around the country.  They include: The Choice, about the causes of the Holocaust and which was published by the B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation League; Homeland, about the threat of censorship and totalitarianism in America which was acclaimed by the ACLU; Woden, about corporate corruption, and Prester John, about religious hypocrisy and media dishonesty. As an actor, Ruffini has appeared in television, film and theatre. He has had principal film roles in Analyze This, Ghost Dog, Find Me Guilty and Extreme Measures, among many others.  He has appeared in episodes of Law and Order, The Sopranos, and on The Conan O’Brien Show. He is also a published novelist, biographer, magazine writer and former journalist having worked at the New York Post, New York Daily News, Mutual Broadcasting System, Channel 5 and Channel 11 in New York. He currently teaches writing and literature at Berkley College in New Jersey. Gene received a grant from The Puffin Foundation for To Love and To Cherish, with the Foundation noting that the work fulfilled their objective of funding thought-provoking theater.

Born in Brooklyn NY, Jessica Zweiman made her directorial debut on the Los Angeles stage with Donald Margulies’ Collected Stories. (She previously assisted in several productions, including Dorothy Lyman’s one-woman show My Kitchen Wars.) Among the plays Jessica has directed are the Neil Simon Trilogy of Brighton Beach Memoirs, Broadway Bound and Biloxi Blues; as well as Dog Opera by Constance Congdon (AIDS Awareness Award), and Paula Vogel’s How I Learned to Drive. Recent directorial work includes Edward Allen Baker’s Face Divided, Caryl Churchill’s Abortive, and Tony Kushner’s Angels in America for the Actors Studio, as well as The Mulatto’s Dilemma (Ovation nominee) at the Gardner Stages in Los Angeles. Jessica also directed the award winning short film Propaganda: The Breakfast Club and is currently in development on the TV pilot Stuck in the Middle. Currently, Jessica is the Shakespeare Lab Associate at The Public Theater in New York City.

Theater for the New City (TNC) is a Pulitzer Prize winning community cultural center that is known for its high artistic standards and widespread community service. All marriage is compromise, but sometimes even the most elastic of relationships can be strained to the breaking point. In Gene Ruffini’s world premiere drama, sixty-something professional couple Paul and Joan West find her birthday celebration marred by familial realizations and recriminations. Sick of the hypocrisy and denials among his “always-loving” relatives, and fueled by drink and his impending divorce, their eldest son Don lashes out at his parents, his soon-to-be-ex-wife, his “perfect” brother, and his lesbian sister and her girlfriend, desperately trying to get all present to confront his proclamations of infidelity, betrayal, enabling and self-loathing. A play where sins of the father and mother come crashing down upon the children, where pride goes before the fall, and where the question becomes “how much is too much” when it comes to sticking by those you profess to love?

Dark Open Casket Comedy Part of 1st IRISH 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE/REQUEST FOR COVERAGE
Contact: Beck Lee/MEDIA BLITZ, INC. (718) 403-0939

“A SHORT WAKE” BY DUBLIN-BORN DEREK MURPHY IN U.S. PREMIERE DURING 1ST IRISH 2009

DARK OPEN CASKET COMEDY SET IN DOWNTOWN FUNERAL PARLOR PERFORMS FROM SEPTEMBER 10 TO 26

“A Short Wake,” a new dark comedy by Derek Murphy set in a New York funeral parlor where two brothers pay some very questionable respects at their father’s wake, receives its U.S. premiere during this year’s 1st Irish Festival in New York. The two-character play features Peter Bradbury and Brandon Williams, and is directed by Ludovica Villar-Hauser. The New York-based production marks the play’s20second incarnation; originally it toured Ireland in the fall of 2007 after its world premiere at the Derry Playhouse. At the time, The Irish Times praised the Dublin-born and New York-based Murphy as “slick, witty and subversive.”

Produced by Tweiss Productions, “A Short Wake” comes to life on Thursday September 10, playing 12 performances through Saturday September 26 at Manhattan Theatre Source, 177 MacDougal Street. Performances during the show’s 3-week engagement are Thursday, Friday & S aturday at 8pm and Saturday at 3pm . Tickets, which are $18, are available via Theatermania.com, by phone at 212/352-3101 or online at www.theatermania.com.

When two first-generation Irish-American brothers, who have become estranged since the suspicious death of their mother, are reacquainted many years later at the wake of their father, secrets meant for the grave are brought to light. Not that this open-casket affair is an open book. Far from it. It seems that the older brother, Teddy, (played by Peter Bradbury), a thief and a rogue, had been there for his father, caring for him in the last weeks of the old man’s life. But to avoid unpleasant questions he spent those weeks pretending to be his younger brother Jimmy (Brandon Williams does the honors), a successful attorney who lives by himself and is protective of his privacy. What appears at first blush as an act of pure deception may have actually resurrected the truth about many things.

Ludovica Villar-Hauser, who produced and directed the long-running hit drama “The Countess,” both Off-Broadway (634 performances) and on the West End, recently directed the U.S. premiere of British playwright Philip Ridley’s “Leaves of Glass” at the Peter J. Sharp Theatre. In 2004 she directed the Off-Broadway world premiere of the drama “Duet.” “A Short Wake’s” production stage manager is Nick Tochelli.

The five-week-long 1st Irish 2009, New York’s first and only all-Irish theatre festival, is presenting the work of 21 Irish playwrights from here and abroad, in 12 venues across New York City. The festival runs from September 1 through October 4. For festival information visitwww.1stIrish.org

The Project will showcase the talents of a new generation of young, professional dancers as they perform Torres’s signature multiculturally-inspired choreography in newly developed Amas work.

“Maria has been in the Amas family for years, having choreographed 4 Guys Named Jose (2000) and directed and choreographed our hit Latin Heat (2003)”, says Trinkoff. “A major part of the Amas mission is to support the emergence of new talent, and while Maria’s career is in full bloom, it’s time for the world to see her impact on the next generation of performers. SHANA FARR TO STAR IN PURE IMAGINATION…

AT LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE JUNE 30, JULY 7 AND JULY 12, 2009

Actress/singer/jewelry designer Shana Farr will make her long awaited cabaret debut at The Laurie Beechman Theatre at The West Bank Café in a thrilling new musical show, Pure Imagination… in which the beautiful and talented soprano will interpret imaginative songs by composers ranging from Harold Arlen to Carly Simon, Jule Styne to Francesca Blumenthal, Paul Williams to Rachmaninoff, and others.

Shana, with the guidance of director Lennie Watts and musical director Steven Ray Watkins, has created a theatrical performance of memorable songs, including beloved standards and cutting edge contemporary numbers, all of which hold special memories for her.

“You might say the show reflects my many colors, diverse musical tastes and my deep appreciation for the power of imagination,” Shana says. “This is an evening of songs that explore all the different pockets of make-believe and magical moments that have not only inspired me but hopefully have inspired others. I hope this show will touch everyone in the audience.”

Pure Imagination… will be presented for three performances only on Tuesdays, June 30 and July 7 at 7:00 PM and on Sunday, July 12, at 2:00 PM. There is a $20 cover and $15 minimum on food and drinks. MAC members receive a $10 discount. . The Laurie Beechman Theatre is located on the lower level of The West Bank Café at the northwest corner of 42nd Street and Ninth Avenue in Times Square’s Theater Row. For reservations, call 212/695-6909.

Shana Farr is a young woman of multiple talents, and with her entrepreneurial flair, she has created a life plan to satisfy both of her major passions. Shana is a trained classical singer educated at Boston University who moved to the Big Apple to find her niche in Gilbert & Sullivan and Musical Theater.  However, she also is a jewelry designer of growing fame who learned her design craft at the esteemed house of Harry Winston.

After collecting several rave reviews for her debut performance in Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Yeoman of the Guard at City Center in 2007, and after realizing there was a growing interest in her jewelry designs, she decided to come up with a way to work in both worlds.  Shana Farr is now producing her own cabaret show Pure Imagination… with songs from all genres from classic to pop, and she has also designed and developed her own line of jewelry to be launched at the end of July.  Both outlets allow her to express herself and to tell her own story which is something she truly enjoys.

Shana’s musical talents have been rewarded with critical praise from a number of respected members of New York’s theatrical community:

In his New York Post review of The Yeoman of the Guard in 2007, Frank Scheck wrote, “Best of all was Shana Farr as the strolling singer Elsie. A last minute replacement for the leading role, this beautiful young performer delivered a polished and vocally radiant turn that garnered flowers and hugs from the visibly relieved director/conductor.”

Following Shana’s performance as Laurey in Oklahoma!, :Bruce Pomahac, Director of Music for the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, wrote, “Shana Farr is a most talented and lovely actress with a crystal clear voice that sits right on top of the notes and she has an attractive sensibility that allows her to deliver the lyrics with wit and warmth and intelligence. She made a perfect Laurey, and I have no doubt that Rodgers and Hammerstein themselves would have enjoyed working with this bright young star.”

At The Delacorte Theater

May 29, 2009 – The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson) will begin previews on Wednesday, June 10 for the Shakespeare in the Park production of TWELFTH NIGHT, directed by Daniel Sullivan.

Charles Borland, Andrew Crowe, Steve Curtis, Christopher Layer, Robin LeMon, and Julie Sharbutt have joined the cast of the production; the complete cast includes the previously announced Michael Cumpsty, Clifton Duncan, Raúl Esparza, Herb Foster, Leslie Harrison, Anne Hathaway, Slate Holmgren, Kevin Kelly, David Kenner, Hamish Linklater, Dorien Makhloghi, Audra McDonald, David Pittu, Ray Rizzo, Jay O. Sanders, Stark Sands, Baylen Thomas, Zach Villa, Jon Patrick Walker, and Julie White.

TWELFTH NIGHT will run June 10-July 12 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park with an official press opening on Thursday, June 25 at 8 p.m.  Bank of America returns as lead sponsor of Shakespeare in the Park 2009.  For additional information about Shakespeare in the Park, visit The Public Theater website at www.publictheater.org

TWELFTH NIGHT, one of Shakespeare’s most beloved romantic comedies, is a time-honored story of cross-dressing and mistaken identity that follows the romantic adventures of Viola and her identical twin Sebastian, both shipwrecked in the enchanted dukedom of Illyria.

This summer, The Public Theater will again offer a limited number of free tickets through a Virtual Line, available at www.publictheater.org. The process will be the same as last year where on the day of a show, users can log on to the virtual line anytime between midnight and 1 p.m. to register for tickets for that evening’s performance.   After 1 p.m. that same day, users can log on to see if they have received tickets through the Virtual Line, which they can then claim at the Delacorte Theater Box Office between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. that evening. A valid photo ID is required for all Virtual Line pick-ups at the box office. The Public Theater will also be implementing a Senior Virtual Line this year which functions the same way as the regular virtual line but registrants must be 65 or older to be eligible.

Summer Supporter tickets for TWELFTH NIGHT and THE BACCHAE are available for a tax-deductible contribution of $170.  These reserved seats are only available for a limited time to ensure that the highest number of free seats will be available to distribute to the general public on the day of the show.  Summer Supporter tickets help to underwrite production expenses.  Supporter tickets are available at The Public Theater Box Office at 425 Lafayette Street or online at www.publictheater.org.

TWELFTH NIGHT will feature original music by symphonic folk-rock band Hem,scenic design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by Jane Greenwood, lighting design by Peter Kaczorowski, sound design by Acme Sound Partners, fight direction by Rick Sordelet, and choreography by Mimi Lieber.

The second Shakespeare in the Park production will be Euripides’s THE BACCHAE, translated by Nicholas Rudall, directed by JoAnne Akalaitis, and featuring original music by Philip Glass. THE BACCHAE, running August 11-30, will be presented as it was always meant to be seen – in the open air of the city.  Akalaitis’ visionary interpretation, featuring a lush choral score by Glass, re-imagines the classic story about what happens when a government attempts to outlaw desire.

For additional information about Shakespeare in the Park, visit The Public Theater website at www.publictheater.org

Founded by Arielle Tepper Madover (producer of such shows as Broadway’s
Mary Stuart, Frost Nixon, Monty Python’s SPAMALOT, The Pillowman, A Raisin in the Sun, and Freak), the non-profit organization The Living Room for Artists, Inc provides emerging writers, directors, designers and producers an opportunity to work on their craft in a protected environment, guided by established professionals at no cost to them.

About the Plays:

The Chimes by Kevin Christopher Snipes; Nick returns to his New England boarding school still haunted by choices he made 40 years ago.  The past overwhelms the present as this thrilling drama flashes back to four young pranksters drawn together by their knack for Shakespeare and ripped apart by the onset of World War II.

Departure Lounge by Dougal Irvine; It’s the end of vacation as four guys wait for their flight home in this testosterone-driven new musical.  With time to kill they recount the hilarious antics of the week, and as secrets tumble out we learn more about the lads than they know about themselves.

The Happy Sad by Ken Urban; Finding love is easy.  Defining love is not.  New York City provides the backdrop to a contemporary comedy of sex, love and dating in a city where there are too many options and not enough time.

Reborning by Zayd Dohrn; Art and life become disturbingly interchangeable when a sculptor of baby dolls meets a woman desperate to recreate the past.  This dark comedy takes an unsettling look at work, latex, and the power of creation.

The Sacrifices by Alena Smith; At first glance the family has everything.  But once they leave on a Caribbean cruise, the winds change, privilege becomes a prison, and their vacation will be anything but smooth sailing in this touching comedy drama.

Tender by Nicki Bloom; A random act of violence leaves a family shattered and searching for a way to be whole again. Amid the ramifications, mystery, memory and potential murder set the stage for this haunting and suspenseful drama.

We Declare You A Terrorist by Tim J. Lord; Eight hundred civilians are taken hostage during the performance of a hit Moscow musical. In the aftermath, the playwright is plagued by the story of his captor—a young woman willing to die for her cause—in an intense drama where one person’s patriotism is another’s act of terrorism.

Whore by Rick Viede; Sara just wants to be interesting, and an unexpected one-night stand propels her into a high stakes relationship with worldly Tim. As they are drawn into the fringes this thriller exposes a world of greed, lies and fear which threatens to break the rules that hold them together.

ABOUT THE DRAMA DESK

The Drama Desk was founded in 1949 to explore key issues in the theater and to bring together critics and writers in an organization to support the ongoing development of theater in New York. The organization began presenting its awards in 1955, and it is the only critics organization to honor achievement in the theater with competition between Broadway, Off- Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions in the same categories.

The organization hosts panels throughout the year, to which the public is invited, to promote understanding and appreciation of the professional theater. In addition to honoring creative artists and stage productions in multiple categories, the Drama Desk annually presents scholarships to two worthy seniors in the Drama Department of the LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts who are planning careers in the theater.

The Drama Desk Awards invites personal sketches from this year’s nominated performers and creative talent for its Art*Kive program, started nine years ago by Art*Kive creator Sarah Galvin. This annual program—unique to the Drama Desk Awards—invites the nominees to render a sketch that is relevant to the role or stage production that helped them achieve their nomination. The sketches will be displayed at the awards ceremony.

To find out more about the organization and this year’s awards show, visit http://www.dramadesk.com.

The Executive Board of the Drama Desk is composed of: William Wolf, President; Leslie (Hoban) Blake, Vice President; Charles Wright, Treasurer and 2nd Vice President; Richard Ridge, Secretary; Robert Cashill; Isa Goldberg, David Kaufman; Ellis Nassour; Sam Norkin; and Barbara Siegel.

NOTE:

Next to Normal was considered last season in its off-Broadway premiere. Alice Ripley was nominated as Outstanding Actress in a Musical and Tom Kitt for Outstanding Music. Under Drama Desk rules only new elements in a transfer can be considered. The producers, who requested that we consider the Broadway transfer only as an entirely new show, refused to invite nominators until it was too late for any new elements to be evaluated.

All elements in both productions of shows that transferred to Broadway in the same season were eligible.

[title of show] was considered in a previous season in its off-Broadway premiere.

Only one actor playing Billy in Billy Elliot was seen by all nominators, who were not invited to see the other two for consideration unless the Drama Desk Executive Board agreed to classify all three separate performances as one unit for Outstanding Actor in a Musical. The Board rejected that request, as well as a request that as an alternative no actor playing Billy be considered.

ANDREA MARCOVICCI

60th BIRTHDAY CONCERT!

AT NEW YORK’S THE TOWN HALL ON MAY 16, 2009

SPECIAL GUESTS INCLUDE STEPHEN SCHWARTZ,

JULIE GOLD & JOHN BUCCHINO

CONCERT ALSO CELEBRATES 90th BIRTHDAY OF HELEN MARCOVICCI,

WHO WILL PERFORM WITH HER DAUGHTER

NEW CD RELEASE MAY 19

“AS TIME GOES BY: THE BEST OF ANDREA MARCOVICCI”

The Town Hall (123 West 43 Street), Times Square’s landmark concert venue, will present ANDREA MARCOVICCI‘s 60th birthday gala concert on Saturday, May 16th at 8PM.  The celebrated singer and actress is lauded as “the greatest cabaret star of her generation” by The International Herald Tribune and “the epitome of elegance and showbiz savvy” by Variety.   The event will coincide with the release of her first-ever “greatest hits” collection, As Time Goes By: The Best of Andrea Marcovicci on Andreasong, her own label. The CD, featuring two newly-recorded songs, will include highlights from three decades of classic recordings. The disc will be available at marcovicci.com, CDBaby.com and at The Town Hall that evening.  Tickets to the concert, which are $45 and $50, are available through TicketMaster (212) 307-4100 or at www.ticketmaster.com or by visiting the Town Hall Box Office (between noon and 6PM, except Sundays), (212) 840-2824.

Act One at The Town Hall features Andrea performing her signature numbers, which include “These Foolish Things,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “The Last Time I Saw Paris” and “The Folks Who Live on the Hill.” In Act Two, Andrea performs songs by newer composers, most of whom will perform with her onstage. Guests include three-time Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), Grammy Award winner Julie Gold (“From A Distance”) and John Bucchino, who will sing a duet with Andrea from his recent Broadway musical A Catered Affair. Other guests include noted ASCAP composers Francesca Blumenthal, Craig Carnelia, Babbie Green, Christine Lavin and Tom Toce. Shelly Markham, Andrea’s longtime music director and also a respected composer, will lead a five piece band and perform two of his own songs.

In addition, the concert will celebrate the 90th birthday of Andrea’s mother Helen Marcovicci, who last year released her latest CD, Seems Like Old Times. During the war years she appeared as Helen Stuart at top New York nightclubs including The Glass Hat, Bill Bertolotti’s, La Vie Parisienne and The Maisonette at the St. Regis. Helen was invited to Paramount Pictures for a screen test, but she turned it down to raise her family.

Andrea’s new CD, As Time Goes By – scheduled for release May 19 – features favorites from her recording career, mostly from out-of-print albums. Highlights include “As Time Goes By” from Marcovicci Sings Movies, which she thinks of as “America’s Favorite Song”; “These Foolish Things” from What Is Love?, which, as Andrea says, “shimmers with nostalgia”; and Maury Yeston’s “New Words,” the now-standard which she helped popularize from her collection of the same name.

Two newly-recorded tracks, “Young At Heart” and “The Lies of Handsome Men,” feature Shelly Markham on piano and Jered Egan on bass. Andrea remembers, “In 1976 ‘Young at Heart’ was the very first song that I sang at the legendary club, Reno Sweeney. And now it’s the closing number for my show Marcovicci Sings Movies II. So, in many ways I’ve come full circle. Music really does keep me young at heart.”

Marcovicci recently created Skylark: A Centennial Tribute to Johnny Mercer, which was commissioned by the Savannah Music Festival, Mercer’s hometown. She will perform the show later this year in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Andrea also will co-host the 23rd Annual Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs Awards on May 18 at BB King’s in New York.

Andrea Marcovicci’s 60th Birthday Concert is part of The Town Hall’s 2009 season that concludes with Broadway By The Year®: Musicals of 1970 (June 15) and Bebel Gilberto (June 19) as part of the JVC Jazz Festival.

Built in 1921 by a group of suffragettes, The Town Hall began as a lecture hall and public forum for debates.  Over the decades, the stage has been graced by Eleanor Roosevelt, Margaret Sanger, Billie Holiday, Igor Stravinsky, Bob Dylan and Miles Davis.  Today the hall flourishes as a popular, affordable venue, boasting the hottest acts in rock, pop, folk, cabaret, world music, comedy and dance, including Billy Joel, Blondie, Elvis Costello, Natalie Merchant, Graham Nash, Liza Minnelli, Cyndi Lauper, Norah Jones, Andre Watts, Henry Rollins, Joe Jackson, Pink Martini, Regina Spector, Brian Adams, Aimee Mann and Dawn Upshaw.  For over a decade, The Town Hall has hosted live broadcasts of Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion.  Over the past two-and-a-half decades, The Town Hall has produced a number of new and critically acclaimed musical series, which include The Century of Change, Not Just Jazz, Broadway By The Year® and The Broadway Cabaret Festival.
